WILDLIFE OF SINGAPORE
Nature Film
This was something that I have longed to do after plunging for the Canon XLH1 more than 2 years ago. A documentary was what I wanted and I needed a showreel to present to funding organisations for support. There are of course plenty more footage but for now, this seems to suffice.
The 5D Mark 2 however is a camera that I may be bringing out more though adapting it for wildlife filmmaking is a totally different thing altogether.
I will be shooting with both systems but the 5D Mark 2 will clearly win handsdown in lowlight situations.
COURSES DE CHEVAUX
A film documenting the Horse Racing Scene in Singapore
Having covered horse racing as a profession for the past 7 odd years, it dawned on me one day that I should bring my 5D Mark II down to grab some video. The ideas expanded in a few days and I decided to make a proper film out of it.
Shot over a couple of months, this film was really only possible with the small format HD DSLRs. Broadcast format cameras would have been cumbersome and punters are generally not receptive to cameras. Of course, the shallow DOF was what I was after and the ability to shoot in low-light areas was a big plus. I had concerns with the jello effect while shooting the race itself but it turned out fine. A Mark IV was used for the raceshots and was shot at 50p. A 5D Mark II and 7D were used for the other shots. If I wanted shallow DOF, the 5D Mark II will be the choice. If light was sufficient and I need extra reach, the 7D was brought in. Any slow motion and action shots would be the Mark IV.
A variety of lenses were used, from tilt shift lenses to Sigma's 300-800. A 70-200 2.8 IS was used with a slider for dollying. Handheld shots (16-35, CZ 28-85) were with the Zacuto Z-finder while tripod shots had the Marshall 651ST monitor.
Edited and colored in Final Cut Studio with Magic Bullet Looks.
Movement
Singapore General Elections 2015 (Hyperlapse, Timelapse, Slow Motion)
With the recent passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our first prime minister, the burning issues of the 2011 elections which have become the smoldering issues, the SG50 Jubilee Celebrations, the quickly executed Singapore General Elections 2015 was hard to predict. And is also the reason why it's the most watched. Will the frequent tribute videos to the late Mr Lee and the perks of the SG50 celebrations sway votes to PAP? Or will people seek for a bigger change, a new movement? Nobody knew.
But what we did know is that there are people around hoping for change, seeking for change. From their cheers to their cries to their boos. Every sound emitted filled with passion and misery, that struck the very core of our bones. Every rally night filled with intense passion and persuasion, hair-standing power of the masses. This, we are glad to be part of and to capture, for this is part of history.
Used timelapse, hyperlapse and slow-motion techniques to create this short film.
Gear: Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 6D, Sony FS7
Variety of Canon and Zeiss lenses.
