The Photographer

I was born in Singapore in 1979 and am now a professional photographer based in Singapore. My love for photography stemmed from my passion for the outdoors. I recall in clear detail how I would be amazed by Lime Butterflies on the host plant in my garden and would yearn for a photo to be taken of it. That was when I was 8 years old.

In the later part of 2002, I took the leap into digital and have never looked back since. Canon with it's outstanding lens and camera technology was my choice and their 6-megapixel D60 served me well for years. In 2009, the Canon 5D Mark II became my main camera and I am well pleased with it.

A large part of my gallery is devoted to nature photography and it was by no accident. Reading John Shaw's "Closeups In Nature" had me totally blown away by the images and I turned to macrophotography of natural history subjects and was hooked ever since. My love for nature macrophotography prompted me to join the Nature Photographic Society Singapore (NPSS) in the year it was founded (2000) and subsequently, I was appointed to be in its committee in 2002 and am currently President for 2010-2011. It was there I learnt to enjoy other aspects of naturephotography such as of avian subjects and landscapes. My joining of NPSS was one of the reasons for the immense improvement in my images as critique was honest but brutal. At the same time, corrective techniques were taught.

I do other forms of photography such as travel and architecture. Timelapse photography is also one of my growing passions and I am exploring more of that. I do filmmaking as well (though with HD cameras rather than 35mm or 16mm) and with the arrival of HD DSLRs, things have taken another path. The quality of the videos coming from the DSLRs are really good and as long as one is working within the limtations, there is a whole lot of potential to come from these cameras.

In late 2009, I quit my day job to allow myself more time on a long form wildlife documentary as well as make frequent travels to pursue my passion in landscape and travel photography. The move out of a regular job also gave me the freedom and time to spend more time shooting horse racing, something I have been doing for the past 7 odd years, at the Singapore Turf Club.
