Micro Blog: 1st May 2010 (Landscape Photography)

Been out for the past 3 days. Travelling alone has its beauty. The absolute freedom you get is very much worth cherishing and is something that cannot be achieved if a partner comes along. This time round, I was out for about 16 hours per day and shooting like there was no tmw. But before conclusions come in to shoot me down. I was shooting at locations that were pre-scounted beforehand. Thus, I was at locations that would more or less not be a waste of time and energy.
Pushing along a foldable bicycle meant my recces could be done with ease and the speed I was going at (ok, it really is pretty slow) is actually more than enough to get rid of the dreaded sandfles. All was well till the last day when I went out to the rocks and slipped. The tripod went separated from the bike and crashed to the rock. I went into the water with one pouch that contained one lens. Blood flowed when I emerged from the water and it was not a good sign. Both legs were cut pretty badly by the barnacles and I washed with bottled water when I got onto a rock. Shaken up, it took me a while to bounce back though I made sure I avoided the wet rocks. An hour odd went by and turning back to look at the beach, my eyes popped open. The tide had come in really quickly and the sands was about a hundred metres away. Hastily packed my gear and grabbed the bike and entered the water. It was chest deep and took a long while before I reached dry ground.
The 5D Mark II is now at Canon for repairs. Apparently, water seeped in through the battery grip and corrsion took place. It may need to be replaced though that will be the last resort. Past few hours was spent thinking about how I can gear up for the elements and protection of the equipment is of paramount importance. I just did some research on the Lowepro Dryzone 200 and that seems to be the bag for me....if I slip again, I can at least be sure that my equipment is safe and sound. To protect myself, I will just need some thick neoprene gloves and a bike helmet....will look somewhat silly shooting with it on but this is a lesson learnt and I will stick to being safe than sorry.
